Aromatic Plants
Plants that protect the garden from insects and disease often have aromatic qualities. These qualities cause distraction so the insects cannot find the plant to parasitize. Peppermint, Oregano, Anise Hyssop, and Bee Balm are examples of aromatic plants used for this quality. These plants strengthen the system so it is more resistant to outside elements that may interfere with its health and balance.
In urban settings, aromatics can be compared to establishments that protect the community, individuals, and the environment from outside attack. Peace groups, educational events, community supported local representatives, and land trusts are examples. Spiritual practices could be viewed as adding aromatic qualities to our lives. Through gathering with others and expressing our commitment to a greater purpose, we are protecting our system with aromatic qualities. The establishment of networks leads to a stronger voice for our causes.
