The Willi Unsoeld SeminarThe Willi Unsoeld Seminar Series Presents A Sense of Wonder, a play about Rachel Carson’s love for nature and her fight to defend it, written and performed by Kaiulani Lee, has been touring the United States for over ten years. The play will be held Thursday, May 3, 2012, 7 pm, at The Longhouse Education and Cultural Center on The Evergreen State College campus. The play has been the centerpiece of regional and national conferences on conservation, education, journalism, and the environment. She has performed it at over one hundred universities, dozens of high schools, the Smithsonian Institute, the Albert Schweitzer Conference at the United Nations, the Sierra Club’s Centennial in San Francisco, and at the Department of the Interior’s 150th anniversary celebration. In addition, Kaiulani Lee opened the 2005 World Expo in Japan and in May 2007 performed the play on Capitol Hill, bringing Miss Carson’s voice once again to the halls of Congress. More on Kauulani Lee: http://www.kaiulanilee.com/ The Willi Unsoeld Seminar Series brings to The Evergreen State College distinguished visitors who reflect the values and philosophy of Willi Unsoeld, a founding faculty member, philosopher, theologian and mountaineer. Beyond the Evergreen community, Unsoeld was well known for his first ascent of the West Ridge of Mt. Everest with Tom Hornbein, in which they made the first successful traverse of any Himalayan peak. For this feat, President John F. Kennedy presented them with the Hubbard Medal, The National Geographic Society’s highest honor. The annual Willi Unsoeld Seminar is endowed as a “living memorial” in honor of Willi Unsoeld, whose spirit continues to influence and guide people every day.
