Come to the Table – A Community Food Summit

By Sustainable South Sound

Imagine a community where no child comes to school hungry, and where everyone has access to safe, local, sustainably grown food. Imagine thriving rural farms and a rich patchwork of vibrant urban gardens and markets and a prosperous local food economy that provides entrepreneurial opportunities and good jobs that can't be outsourced. Imagine a community that has recognized the realities of climate change and peak oil, and has taken charge of its food future.

Sound impossible? A growing number of individuals, organizations and community leaders think that it is not only possible but essential that we realize this vision. That's why we are coming together to host Come to the Table – A Community Food Summit, on Friday, October 14 and Saturday, October 15, 2011.

The Food Summit will bring together those who grow, make, process, eat and are otherwise involved with food here in South Puget Sound. An action plan to bolster our local food system will developed and all are invited to participate.

Friday, October 14 will feature a giant community pot-luck on the streets of downtown Olympia, an environmental and agricultural expo, and a presentation by Mark Winne – author of Food Rebels, Guerrilla Gardeners, and Smart Cookin' Mamas: Fighting Back in an Age of Industrial Agriculture and Closing the Food Gap – at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, 512 Washington Street SE. This event is free and open to all.

Saturday, October 15 will be a 'roll up your sleeves' conference at the Thurston County Fairgrounds, 3054 Carpenter Road SE, where we will learn about our current local food system, clarify our vision for the future, and start building the roadmap to get us from today to tomorrow.

Registration for October 15th is $35 before September 15, either by mail or online. After September 15, registration is $50 and online only. Register online or get mailing address at http://www.sustainsouthsound.org Contact TJ Johnson, tjjohnson@scattercreek.com, for more information.
