Come Out of Your Shell! Become a Stream Team Salmon Steward

Salmon returning to their rivers of origin generate excitement in our communities. People from all backgrounds come out to public viewing locations to watch these amazing fish. You can become a Salmon Steward volunteer educator and answer questions about the Deschutes and McLane Creek salmon runs. Deschutes salmon run begins in mid-August and runs through the end of September; the McLane Creek chum run begins in November and ends in early December. No prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and enjoy!

New Salmon Stewards attend four two-hour basic trainings: two classroom trainings and two on-site trainings for the Deschutes Hatchery Chinook. Later in November, there will be additional trainings for the McLane Creek wild Chum run.

Two classroom training dates are scheduled as follows:

1. Basic Salmon Training on August 11 from 6:00-8:00 pm;
2. Threats to Salmon on August 18 from 6:00-8:00 pm. #}

   Both trainings are at the City of Olympia Maintenance Center conference room at 1401 Eastside St., SE. Site visit to 5th Avenue Bridge and Dam are scheduled for August 15 from 9:00-11:00 am.

   Trainers include staff from the City of Olympia, and two state agencies, the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and General Administration, as well as experienced Salmon Stewards. Other training dates TBA.
