Join the Cool Thurston Campaign

by Rachel Laderman, member of Olympia Climate Action

Have you been hungering to make changes and be part of the solution to climate change, but unsure how, or feeling it makes no difference? The "Cool Thurston Campaign" is here to tell you that change starts with the individual, there are fabulous resources in our community to do so, and your efforts can make a difference!

Join others March 2nd in a Global Warming Café workshop to launch the Cool Thurston Campaign. The Campaign is a strategy to make big changes in the global environment by starting at the individual level. It is centered around the book "Low Carbon Diet, A 30-Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds," by David Gershon. Olympia Climate Action and the Thurston Climate Action Team are hosting this program and enhancing it with local information and resources. The Café will be from 7:00-9:00 pm at the Thurston County Courthouse (see details at end).

At the Global Warming Café you will learn how to take action on climate change, and form or join an Ecoteam. Leading a team is a great way to take that next step by assuming a leadership role. Teams help each other take actions that lower their household or business contribution to the greenhouse gasses responsible for climate change. Your team meets a total of four times over a month, and ultimately you each lose 5000 pounds of yearly greenhouse gas emissions.

Ecoteams can be anything from one individual or household, to a neighborhood, social group, workplace, or other group of 8-10 members. They're also a great way to build community and get to know your neighbors. The potential benefits are huge – such as neighbors helping neighbors to find commute alternatives, share tools or garden produce, and weatherize their homes, to note a few ideas.

If you feel like individual efforts just aren't going to make a difference to the world's climate, think of this: our daily lifestyles represent half of America's carbon footprint and our purchases influence the other half. Households represent between 50- 90% of a community's carbon footprint. Together, our lifestyle changes pave the path for policy initiatives, new technologies, green markets, public transportation, and alternative energy. According to Gershon, change happens from the bottom up and the top down simultaneously. For more information on Gershon's Low Carbon Diet, see http://www.empowermentinstitute.net/lcd/

Please plan to attend this evening of stimulating conversation and planning and bring a mug to enjoy some hot apple cider. For more information call Barb Scavezze, 360-878-9901 or barb@scavezze.com.
