Residents Decry Plan to Reduce Zoning Density

Protests plentiful at Thurston County public hearing

A plan to rezone pockets of higher-density-zoned land in rural Thurston County to allow fewer homes to be built drew sharp outcries recently at a public hearing.

The higher-density pockets are called LAMIRDs, or limited areas of more intense rural development. The county has about 50 such pockets now, but is proposing to rezone about half of them — with an emphasis on those that are not developed.
