Why Celebrate the Summer Solstice?

by Doris Faltys ----

Ancients celebrated,
Understood connections,
to the sun, earth, life, death,
community.

Plants and animals celebrate the sun,
Understand connections,
sun, water, healthy food, clean air.

Children celebrate,
Understand importance of connecting,
Mud on face, fingers full of cat's hair,
grass clippings thrown high, laughter shared.

We understand connections
Sun, water, healthy environment
Life, sustainability.

Why celebrate?
Because it's fun,
Because you can sing,
Because you can dance,
Because it's the longest day of the year,
Because there are so few times we all consciously try to connect,
Because someone, anyone, may watch you, and see the connection for themselves.
