Bike Commute Guide Available

The long-awaited Washington State Bicycle Commute Guide is now available from the Energy Outreach Center. The Guide was the brain-child of its author, our Club's government affairs coordinator Larry Leveen, and is a joint project of the Capital Bicycling Club and the Energy Outreach Center. It's the first guide that gives full treatment to-as its cover says-"the fun and rewarding art of bicycle commuting." It covers all details of bicycle commuting, including getting yourself and your bike outfitted, dealing with cleaning up and dressing at work, and riding safely and legally. There's also a special section filled with some "bike-geek" basics, including information on proper helmet and bike fit; quick releases; and a safe-bike checklist. Even veteran commuters will find new information.

The Guide has been developed and printed with the help of many bike advocates and public agencies. The Traffic Safety Commission provided a mini-grant to fund some of the development costs, and another mini-grant for some of the printing costs. Other agencies contributing to its printing were Intercity Transit and the Departments of Ecology, General Administration, and Transportation. Richard Apple of Apple International provided graphic-design services and produced over 20 original illustrations to make the document visually appealing and inviting for would-be commuters. The Guide also benefitted from review and editing by several local advocates, including Sophie Stimson of the City of Olympia's public works department. A big "thank you" and round of applause for all who made this new resource possible.

To get a copy of the Guide, stop by the Energy Outreach Center, or call Dave Catterson at (360) 943-4595.
