Thurston Climate Action Team Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory

Thurston Climate Action Team (TCAT), a local non-profit that has been working on climate-related projects and issues since 2008, has initiated a project that will provide a community-scale greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory to Thurston County officials and the community. The project seeks to provide local jurisdictions and community members with a carbon footprint scorecard, while encouraging inter-jurisdictional collaboration to set goals for GHG reduction and to take effective action.

TCAT has received support and encouragement from the cities of Tumwater, Olympia and Lacey, as well as Thurston County officials and the Thurston Regional Planning Council.

This project will build upon those agencies' prior efforts to establish internal GHG emissions inventories (i.e., business, city, or county operations), while incorporating new data from residential, commercial, and industrial emission sources. Using a baseline year of 2010, TCAT will provide the framework for an annual, community-wide GHG emissions inventory and report out to city and county representatives.

The TCAT team is currently collecting and compiling data from the many GHG emission source types and is on track to begin reporting back to the county and cities in early 2013. County-wide datasets are being collected from Puget Sound Energy (PSE) for fossil fueled energy generation and consumption, Thurston Regional Planning Council (TRPC) for transportation estimates, and Thurston County for sources relating to landfilled-waste. The project calculations and findings will be compiled into an annual report that will encourage planning and policy discussions around emission reduction targets, action plans, and tracking.

TCAT is not a membership organization but welcomes public input, and meets the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the Thurston County Courthouse, 2000 Lakeridge Dr. SW, Room 280.
