This Season: Welcome in the Salmon as a Salmon Steward!If you want to help welcome salmon back to the area, educate people, and answer questions about salmon, then the Stream Team would love to have you join their Salmon Stewards program. If you don't know much about salmon, don't worry - training is provided. Salmon Stewards are volunteer educators who talk to people and answer questions about salmon at the 5th Avenue Bridge at Tumwater Falls Park, and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) McLane Creek Nature Trail. Salmon Stewards volunteer for two-hour shifts on weekends and some evenings during September and October. The training is made up of a basic and a field training class. You have two opportunities to take the basic Salmon Stewards training class: Tuesday, August 14, and Wednesday, August 22. Both classes will take place in Olympia from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The class will cover salmon biology and identification, and influences of habitat, hatcheries, and harvest on salmon populations. An advanced Salmon Steward training class will take place on Wednesday, October 24 at in Olympia from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This class will concentrate on chum salmon and cover more advanced and specific information on salmon. Steve Schrader, from the Department of Fish and Wildlife, will be the guest speaker. The field portion of basic training will take place on Saturday, August 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Participants will meet at the 5th Avenue Bridge in downtown Olympia. Field training for Tumwater Falls will be held from on Saturday, September 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at Tumwater Falls Park. Field training for the return of chum salmon at McLane Creek will be scheduled later in the season at the DNR McLane Creek Nature Trail.
