GP Updates and Thank-Yous

When It Comes to Water, Candidates' Views Matter

What will local leaders do to prepare for our future? With the growing effects of pollution, climate change, and scarce water resources in the South Sound, listening to the goals and views of political candidates is increasingly important. In this issue, Olympia-area political candidates answer our questions on water issues. We are thankful for the volunteer time of Paul Allen, Thea Davis, and Janine Gates for crafting the questions. Questions to the mayoral candidates may be viewed on our website at http://www.oly-wa.us/greenpages/

THANK YOU to the Water editors and staff for this issue including Paul Allen, Abby Brown, Thea Davis, Janine Gates, and Paul Pickett. They worked with area organizations to submit articles on many water topics. We did not have room to print all the material we received, and what we print here is just a drop in the bucket. Finally, thank you to artist Nikki McClure for contributing the cover artwork and allowing us to continue to use her inspiring images in the Green Pages.

We encourage readers to pick up future Green Pages issues and look for other good sources of water information. You might consider... Ask not what water can do for you; ask what you can do to protect our waters. With that in mind, we hope this issue fares thee well. Green Pages Staff

The Water Issue... With a Twist

This issue aims to help readers gain a foothold on some local water issues - and some local candidates' views on them. Always and forever, the range of water topics seems as vast as the sea, and what we provide here is just a drop in the bucket. The Water Team Mates (editors and staff) include Paul Allen, Abby Brown, Thea Davis, Janine Gates, and Paul Pickett. They've navigated this SS Green Pages towards local experts, willing to write about water.

Paul Allen and Janine Gates handcrafted open-ended candidate questions to help readers see candidates' views on some timely water issues, to reach a clearer view for the candidates' primaries on August 21 and election on November 6. We are thankful for the insight from many local organizations on the state of water in our area. As well, thank you to Olympia-area candidates for responses to our questions.

You may review the overflow of responses and articles at: http://www.oly-wa.us/GreenPages/ We hope this issue will fare thee well.

Next Issue's Theme

The next issue's theme is about action: business, change, and consumers. Are you doing something or know of a business or organization that is doing something to increase awareness or change the direction of our world? What Consumers and businesses are doing and can do. We will continue to report on climate change on water issues. For writer's guidelines or to submit article for review, email speech@zhonka.net, or visit our website at: http://www.oly-wa.us/GreenPages/

You Can Write Environmental News!

You don't have to be a professional writer to write for the South Sound Green Pages. With each issue, we are thankful and encouraged by the contributions of many local writers, photographers and artists. If you would like to submit something for review, please email speech@zhonka.net. We accept articles on local environmental news, announcements and events, images, and your commentary. Get in touch!

The Green Pages Seeks Volunteers

Whether you have just a little time or would like to contribute a lot, we are looking for volunteers to keep things moving. For some volunteer staff positions, we request a minimum six-month commitment:

Copy Editor: This person would know or get to learn with us the finer details of editing for a newspaper. If you already have a good sense of writing and grammar, our staff is glad to teach you the rest.

Grantwriter: We are currently looking for an individual interested in seeking out and writing grants for our organization. Some experience is preferable but not required. This is a critical position in our development.

Advertising Manager: If you like to make business contacts, this is a great way to generate advertisers for our paper - and now our website. Encourage local business to support a worthy cause - environmental news - by placing an ad in print or online.

Office Manager: This volunteer would help the Managing Editor coordinate most aspects of the office tasks, and help things run smoothly. Office Manager would also attend board meetings, when possible. A position that could be self-created, and a great way to learn non-profit functions.

Website Liaison: Help communicate changes and design our newly crafted website. There is much more creative work to be done.

For more information on volunteer opportunities, email speech@zhonka.net.

Special Thank You to the Green Pages Volunteer Staff

Special thanks to MANY volunteers for the sweat and dedication to get environmental news out to the community. In particular, my left and right hand staff mates at SPEECH, Janine Gates and Paul Allen. Without their guidance, the GP wouldn't be nearly the same! Thea Davis, Managing Editor
