TEAL Endorses Rex, Langer, Weber

by Matthew Green

The Thurston Environmental Action League, the Thurston County affiliate of Washington Conservation Voters, is proud to announce its first endorsements for the 2000 election season.

After interviewing candidates in the Democratic primary races, TEAL has endorsed Peter Rex for State Representative 22nd District, Steve Langer for Thurston County Commissioner District 1, and Jim Weber for Thurston County Commissioner District 2.

TEAL also endorsed two long-time environmental advocates running for re-election: State Senator Karen Fraser (D-22) and State Representative Sandra Romero (D-22). These two friends of the environment have each given more than a decade of elected service to our community, and TEAL is pleased to support them again.

Peter Rex

  • When TEAL met with Peter Rex, he showed exceptional awareness and concern about our environment, going beyond slogans to focus on the real challenges facing us on environmental issues. TEAL is confident he will stand out as a leader in the state House on issues important to our quality of life. -}

    Steve Langer

    • Through years of local activism, Steve Langer has proven himself to be a passionate advocate to protect our local environment, especially on the issues of clean water, saving salmon, and growth management. TEAL also believes Steve is more knowledgeable about local conservation and quality of life issues than perhaps anyone else in the county. -}

      Jim Weber

      • As a city councilmember, Jim Weber has worked ceaselessly to raise environmental concerns about development in Lacey. He also has led efforts to make Longs Pond a place where children can now learn to fish while gaining respect for our natural environment, and to secure thousands of dollars in funding to restore salmon habitat in Woodland Creek. -}

        TEAL has been active in Thurston County politics since 1992, focusing on endorsing environmentally responsible candidates at the county and city level. TEAL's goals are both to endorse the best environmental candidates and also to elect them and hold them accountable in public office.

        Currently, TEAL is the only local environmental group with the volunteer energy and the legal status as a political action committee necessary to get involved this way in political campaigns. Washington Conservation Voters, our statewide parent organization, provides staff and organizational assistance, but the local volunteer TEAL board makes local endorsement decisions.

        TEAL will be working throughout this campaign to elect our endorsed candidates. You can join us we deliver leaflets to Thurston County neighborhoods and phone voters in support these good environmentalists. If you care about our environment and would like to get involved in electing environmentally responsible local officials, please let us know. E-mail us at teal@olywa.net or call Matthew Green at 943-1741. And of course, TEAL encourages everyone to vote for Peter, Steve, Jim, Karen, and Sandra in the primary election on September 19.

        Matthew Green is a member of the TEAL Board.
