Jin Shin Jyutsu: Healing Ourselves, Healing the Earth

by Linda Marie Watt

I am aware that the Earth is experiencing disharmony and imbalance. I see this in the chaotic weather patterns, the depleted soil, the foul air, and the numerous earthquakes and volcanoes occurring on our planet. In the midst of all this I am thankful for newspapers such as Green Pages and organizations like SPEECH that seek to bring harmony and balance to our world through education and action. But is there something more that we can do? I believe there is.

I see our outer world -- the Earth and its environment -- as a reflection of our individual inner worlds -- our attitudes and health. As the individual becomes more balanced and harmonized so this is reflected in more balanced and harmonized surroundings. Therefore I encourage you to look to your own personal health and happiness as a way of contributing to the health and happiness of our planet as a whole. There are many paths to healing ourselves and our Earth and one of these is through the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu®.

This ancient healing art was practiced throughout the world before the time of Buddha and Moses. It reemerged in Japan at the turn of the century through a man name Jiro Murai and was brought to the United States by Mary Burmeister in the 1950s. Because of its profound effectiveness in changing people's physical and emotional health it is becoming increasingly widespread.

Jin Shin Jyutsu is a simple art of effortless living. It can be practiced on oneself as well as with a practitioner. The body energy is read by holding the wrists. Clients remove their shoes and lie on a comfortable futon for about an hour while the practitioner lightly hold various points on the body. While this art is simple it is very profound in harmonizing the body, the mind, and the emotions. And the more harmonized we are, the healthier and happier we are.

Increasingly we are being called upon to take more responsibility for our lives from the health of our individual bodies to the health of this beautiful planet on which we live. More of us question our healthcare providers; more of us question the manner in which our environment is being used. I believe that as we become more harmonious and healthy we will require and so create a more harmonious and healthy planet. For me it comes down to each individual taking action to create change. If you desire a healthy planet, then create a healthy body.

If you wish to begin practicing the art of Jin Shin Jyutsu you can start by holding your fingers. Simply wrap the fingers of one hand around the opposite thumb and hold lightly. This will begin to harmonize the attitude of worry and anxiety -- it will begin to clear the mind and relax the body. You can also go to the Timberland Library and check out Alice Burmeister's book, Healing Touch.

I wish each of you health and happiness -- individually and for our planet as a whole.

Linda Marie Watt is a longtime resident of Thurston County and a practitioner of Jin Shin Jyutsu.
